Apple's iTV
iTV is the code-name for a set-top
box being developed by Apple Computer for release in the first quarter of
2007.
iTV will resemble the Mac mini in form, but will be half the
height, and will enable content to be streamed from any computer running
Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows with iTunes onto a household television.

Apple plans to sell

The
iTV was previewed
as a teaser at 'It's Showtime!' , a special event hosted by Apple CEO
Steve Jobs at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San
Francisco, California on September 12, 2006. |

Jobs introduced the product with the
line "One last thing...", which is a variant of his phrase "One more
thing..." which he is fond of using for introducing the most
anticipated (and speculated) product or service, adding a climactic
end to his speeches. In his introduction, Jobs elaborated,
You can take a movie, download it to a computer, put it on your iPod.
But what about that big flat screen TV you just bought last weekend?
You need a box to drive that big screen TV. How’s the box going to
talk to the computer? Do I want to string cables throughout my house?
So I’m going to talk to it using wireless network, to get the content
from the computer to the box, from the box to the TV.
iTV is likely to sport a "Front Row 2.0" interface, and tight
integration with Apple's new Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. In direct
competition is the Microsoft Xbox 360, which will be able to download
and rent movies via the internet by November 22, 2006.
It is rumored that the iTV will sport other features, such as a built
in DVR feature, or even Live TV, but this is highly unlikely. Like the
iPod, the iTV will start out as a mainly recorded media device, such
as available for the iPod. Of note: rumors have been around recently
suggesting a phone/iPod combination. If so, this product would mean
that the iPod would no longer be a handheld device for just recorded
media, opening the gate for other products like the iTV to have other
features like Live TV. A special service would be needed to power
these features though, and so would have to span across Apple's entire
product line, from the Mac to the iPod to the iTV.
The Apple iTV has opened of a third "digital
living room" sector for Apple expanding the company from its
successful Apple Mac and iPod/iTunes sectors. With the Apple iTV
on the horizon many have wondered if Apple will produce an Apple TV to
compliment the device.
